What we publish
Our Register tells us how many nurses and midwives in the United Kingdom (UK) and nursing associates in England are currently able to practise. We publish data from our Register every six months.
Our annual reports cover the 12 month period from April to March every year, but we also publish a mid-year report covering the six month period from April to September.
As well as the size of the Register, our reports show the number of joiners and leavers, a breakdown of the Register by age and field of practice, and much more.
The big picture
The number of nurses, midwives and nursing associates on the NMC Register has reached a record high of 867,935.
That’s 14,228 more than the same time last year and represents around 2.5% of the UK working population.
This growth shows more people are joining the Register (41,542) than leaving (30,323).
However, the rate of growth of the Register has almost halved – between April 2025 and March 2026 the Register grew by just 1.7% compared to 3.3% between April 2024 and March 2025.
This is mainly due to fewer internationally educated professionals joining the Register. In 2025-26, 26.4% of new joiners to the Register were internationally educated, compared to 39.1% the year before and a high of 49.4% in 2023-24.
The number of UK-educated professionals joining the Register also fell by 4.9% compared to the same time last year, contributing to the slower growth.
